Our Story: Small School, Big History, MASSIVE Heart!
Ongaonga School has been kicking goals, making memories, and standing tall at the absolute heart of our community for over 150 years! From wild humble beginnings to our bright, buzzing modern classrooms, here is the epic journey of how we became the powerhouse school we are today:
1875 – Blast Off! The story begins! The original Ongaonga District School opened its doors to just 20 brave young pioneers. Fun fact: That very first schoolhouse is STILL standing right opposite the old hotel—now operating as our incredibly cool local school museum!
1886 – Leveling Up! As our township boomed, so did our school family. We upgraded to a grand 4-classroom setup right on our current site to welcome a whopping 61 students!
1966 – The Big Makeover! Out with the old, in with the awesome! The Hawke’s Bay Education Board officially opened the bright, modern school buildings we know and love today, keeping up with a record-breaking roll of around 100 kids!
Ongaonga School Today: Small Classrooms, Huge Horizons!
Fast forward to today: we are a proud, vibrant, tight-knit school family of 30 fantastic learners across 2 thriving classrooms.
While the decades roll on, our spirit only gets stronger. Around here, our size is our ultimate superpower! It means every child is known, celebrated, and championed every single day. We build unbreakable friendships, foster bold thinkers, and cheer each other on to reach for the stars. We might be a small school, but we are doing BIG, BOLD, INCREDIBLE things!
